Diabetes is the short name for the disease called diabetes mellitus. Diabetes results when the body cannot use blood sugar as energy because of having too little insulin or being unable to use insulin.

In 2004, it was reported that more than 150 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes. Its incidence is increasing rapidly, and it is estimated that by the year 2025 this number will double.
